 Summary:

This passage focuses on the definition and scope of technology and its impact in modern society, with particular reference to mobile telephony. Technology covers not only the methods of producing goods or services, but also the processes and equipment to achieve the goals. The spread of mobile telephony, a representative of modern technology, has not only changed the way people communicate, but has also led to changes in social structures and practices. The reduction of pay phones, the formation of new social norms, and people's dependence on mobile phones are all manifestations of the far-reaching impact that mobile phones have had on society. In short, mobile telephony, as a product of technology, is profoundly changing people's lifestyles and social structures.

What I Learned

Social networks serve many positive functions, such as helping people to develop business networks and keep in touch with distant friends and family. However, they also have some negative consequences, such as the possibility of leaving a history of unpleasant behaviours that can adversely affect an individual's future.

Gender inequality also exists on social networks. For example, women who post sexualised avatar photos may suffer negative comments on social networks, being perceived as less physically, socially and able to complete tasks than women who post non-sexualised photos.

This suggests that while social networks provide a seemingly egalitarian digital space, real-world gender biases and stereotypes still play a role.

Question

What are the reasons for the negative impact of social networking on the academic performance of college students? Can this shadow be mitigated through education or changes in usage habits?

Comments

  1. the excessive time spent on social media platforms, which reduces the time available for studying and completing assignments; the distraction and reduced attention span caused by frequent notifications and social interactions, and the potential for social comparison and cyberbullying, which can affect mental health and focus. However, this shadow can be mitigated through education on effective time management and digital literacy, encouraging students to set boundaries for social media use, and promoting the use of these platforms for academic collaboration and resource sharing. Additionally, integrating lessons on the responsible use of social media into the curriculum and fostering a balanced approach to technology can help students develop healthier usage habits.
