W14.1-GUO YING

 1. Summary

Race is a classification of humans based on real or imagined physical differences, typically determined by others rather than chosen by individuals. The concept and classification of race often spark controversy, affecting social identity and status. Race focuses on social characteristics, with its classification history tracing back to ancient Egypt, further developed in ancient Greece, Rome, and the Middle Ages. Scientific attempts at racial classification emerged in the 17th century, coinciding with European imperialism and colonization. Race is distinguished by skin color, facial features, and other traits, believed to reflect moral and intellectual differences. Early racial classifications were based on essentialism, but evolutionary theory and genetics challenged their scientific validity. Today, race is viewed as a social construct, with scholars using "population" instead of "race" for analysis. Racism manifests through individual actions or institutional implicit biases. Despite research indicating race as a social construct, racism and inequality persist.                                      2. Interesting point.                                                              Racism can manifest not only through conscious individual actions but also through the unconscious behaviors of institutions. This reveals the multi-layered and covert nature of racism, illustrating its deep-rooted and complex nature and reflecting the close connection between science, history, and society.
