Institutionalized settings such as prisons and mental health facilities aim to assist in the re-socialization of individuals who have not successfully undergone socialization. Understandings of socialization include symbolic interactionism, role theory, reinforcement theory, and internalization theory. Joining groups involves an important process of socialization aimed at adapting individuals to societal demands.
