Summary:
Symbolic interactionism is a sociological theory that emphasizes interactions between individuals through the creation of symbols and meanings through shared language that shape social and personal behavior. It has its roots in pragmatism and pragmatics, and has had a significant impact on micro-sociology and social psychology, revealing that people live in both natural and symbolic environments.
What I Learned
Symbolic interactionism emphasizes that interaction between individuals is at the heart of social behaviour. People learn to develop their personalities and social roles through interaction. Our behavior is influenced not only by past interactions but also by current ones. Understanding social interaction is therefore key to understanding human behavior.
Question
How does contemporary symbolic interactionism lack an interrogation of the subjective processing of the environment within the participants? What is the importance of this scrutiny for understanding and interpreting symbolic interaction?
Symbolic interactionism focuses more on external behaviors and interaction patterns, while ignoring the individual's inner world. For example, how individuals' emotions, cognitive processes, intrinsic motivations, etc. play a role in the process of symbolic interaction is often not fully explored. The inner state of participants is often an important driver of changes in interactions. Understanding an individual's inner emotional fluctuations, psychological conflicts, etc. can help explain why the same interaction pattern produces different results at different times or situations.
