1. Summary
Sociology of religion is the discipline that utilizes the tools and methods of sociology to study the beliefs, practices, and organizational forms of religion. It employs both quantitative and qualitative methods for objective investigation, including surveys, observations, interviews, and analysis of literature. Originating from Durkheim's study on suicide rates, sociology of religion distinguishes itself from philosophy of religion by not evaluating the validity of religious beliefs. Classic theorists such as Marx, Weber, and Durkheim offer complex understandings of the influence of religion, which remain influential. Types of religious organizations include churches, sects, and cults, while gender, family, and culture also influence religious beliefs.
2. Interesting points
One interesting point is that physicists and mathematicians are using mathematical models based on nonlinear dynamics to predict the future religious orientation of populations. I believe this novel approach provides new tools and perspectives for the field of religious sociology, challenging traditional research methods. Another intriguing point is that religion in some countries is heading towards "extinction," which deepens my thoughts on religious change and social transformation.
3. Question
How does the dynamic relationship between religion and globalization evolve with changes in time and geography, and what are the implications of this change for society and culture?
