 1.Summary

The Free Culture Movement is a social movement aimed at promoting the free distribution and modification of creative works by others in the form of free or open content, without the need for compensation, or obtaining consent from the original creators through the use of the internet and other forms of media. This movement opposes excessive copyright laws, believing that such laws hinder creativity, and refers to this system as "permission culture." The Free Culture Movement is aligned with the Free and Open Source Software Movement and other movements and ideologies such as Open Access, Remix Culture, Hacker Culture, Access to Knowledge Movement, Copyleft Movement, and Public Domain Movement. Its development background includes the passage of the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act by the United States Congress in 1998, as well as the activities of Lawrence Lessig and the establishment of the Creative Commons Foundation. The Creative Commons Foundation promotes the concepts of open content and open knowledge, and has developed a series of Creative Commons licenses, including CC BY, CC BY-SA, and CC0, as well as specialized licenses for data and databases.

2.Interesting points

The free culture movement challenges traditional copyright beliefs, arguing that excessive copyright laws hinder creativity and innovation. This perspective subverts long-held perceptions of copyright and advocates for a more open and liberated cultural dissemination approach.

3.Questions

Apart from the Creative Commons Foundation, what other organizations or individuals are promoting the free culture movement?
