 1.Summary

This week's reading material primarily introduces the methods sociologists use when studying social life. The main purpose is to illustrate how sociologists go beyond common sense when attempting to explain or understand social phenomena. They question and analyze the reasons behind events, considering whether there are ways to prevent them before they occur. In sociology, information gathered through scientific means is privileged, while information obtained through other methods may be rejected if lacking scientific evidence. The main discussion focused on the importance of the scientific method in scientific research and knowledge acquisition, as well as the different methods employed by sociologists when exploring the social world. The scientific method is regarded as the foundation for validating research findings and acquiring new knowledge. In addition to using the scientific method, sociologists also explore two different research approaches: quantitative sociology and qualitative sociology. Quantitative sociology employs quantitative methods to explain and predict social phenomena, while qualitative sociology focuses on understanding the cultural and intrinsic aspects of social phenomena. Sociologists use observation, hypothesis, deduction, and induction to interpret social phenomena, which is considered the fundamental logic of scientific practice.

Among the points mentioned above, what I find interesting is the distinction between quantitative and qualitative sociology, which introduces two different research methods. Quantitative sociology focuses on using numerical methods to explain and predict social phenomena, while qualitative sociology emphasizes understanding the cultural and intrinsic aspects of social phenomena. This demonstrates the diversity of research methods within sociology.

What are the specific applications of the scientific method in the field of social science, and what is its impact on verifying research results and advancing knowledge?

    The scientific method is applied in the social sciences through quantitative and qualitative research methods to collect and analyze data for validating research outcomes. While it facilitates knowledge accumulation and progress, it is constrained by the complexity of research subjects and ethical issues.
