  1、Summary

This chapter is intended to be an introduction to the methods employed by sociologists in the study of social life, rather than involving statistics or detailing specific methods of sociological investigation. Its main purpose is to show how sociologists go beyond common sense understanding in explaining or understanding social phenomena. Sociologists question and analyze why things happen and explore whether there are ways to stop the problem before it happens. In discussing the methods by which sociologists claim authority to talk about social life, mention is made of the different ways in which people acquire knowledge, including: authority, experience, logic, tradition, revelation, science. In sociology, information gathered through science is privileged over all other information. In other words, information gathered using other methods may be rejected if it is not supported by evidence gathered using scientific methods. Sociologists therefore value the knowledge generated by the scientific method and support their research and theories through the evidence gathered by science.

2、Interesting point

Sociology is the study of how people in different cultures live, think and act. By comparing the differences and similarities between different cultures, one can gain insight into the diversity and commonality of human beings.

3、Problem

Why does society have poverty, racial discrimination, gender inequality, and so on?
