This is an article about sociology of religion. W5.2

It discusses what sociologists study about religion and the different ways they define it.

Sociologists are interested in understanding the function of religion in society and how it changes over time. They do not judge religions as true or false.

There are three main ways that sociologists define religion: sacred vs. profane, existential questioning, and supernatural. Each definition has its strengths and weaknesses.

Sociologists also classify religions into different types, such as churches, sects, and denominations.
