This is an article about sociology of religion. W5.2

•  It discusses what sociologists study about religion and the different ways they define it.

•  Sociologists are interested in understanding the function of religion in society and how it changes over time. They do not judge religions as true or false.

•  There are three main ways that sociologists define religion: sacred vs. profane, existential questioning, and supernatural. Each definition has its strengths and weaknesses.

•  Sociologists also classify religions into different types, such as churches, sects, and denominations.
