【Week 2.2 March 15(Fri)】——Cheng Yating
1)Summary
Today
I learned basic sociological methods, which are the tools and techniques used
by sociologists to conduct research and gather data about society. The main
methods are positivism and deductive reasoning. The four steps are
Characterization, Hypothesis, Prediction, and Testing. In addition, we need to
distinguish the difference between correlation and causation, and we must pay
attention to research ethics.
2)Interesting
One
interesting aspect mentioned is the distinction between qualitative and
quantitative research methods. Qualitative methods focus on understanding
social phenomena through in-depth analysis of subjective experiences, meanings,
and interpretations. In contrast, quantitative methods emphasize numerical data
and statistical analysis to identify patterns and relationships within
populations. Understanding the differences between these two approaches
provides insight into the diverse ways sociologists study and understand
society.
3)Discussion
I want
to discuss the question mentioned in the reading material——How does sociological inquiry move beyond common sense?
Sociological inquiry moves beyond common sense by systematically analyzing social phenomena using empirical evidence, theoretical frameworks, and rigorous methods of inquiry. While common sense relies on individual experiences, intuition, and everyday observations to make sense of the social world, sociological inquiry seeks to uncover deeper patterns, structures, and dynamics that may not be immediately apparent. Besides, I want to know how sociologists balance the need to challenge common sense assumptions with the need to communicate their findings to a broader audience in a way that is accessible and meaningful.
